Special Needs Giveaway! Two $50 credits to ARK Therapeutic!

ARK Grabbers

Are you interested in some of the fabulous products offered by ARK Therapeutic Services? I received a great response to my earlier post on chewies and thought we could do something to help families in that area. I already know that many of you use the ARK Grabber® and other chewy products they make, but they also make many other therapy and helpful items – you should check out their website. For our first special needs giveaway here on SavingCase, we have two, count ’em two, $50 credits to ARK Therapeutic Services (www.arktherapeutic.com)! So read this post and at the end, make sure to follow the instructions to comment, like, follow, and fan in order to enter! I wanted to highlight some of the products offered by ARK so you could get a sense from a first-person point of view. These products were graciously provided to me by the folks at ARK. It was important to me that ARK products are all made in the USA and are constructed out of medical grade materials that are FDA compliant and contain no lead, phalates, PVC, BPA, or latex. This should be important to us when considering objects that may spend a great deal of time in our children’s mouths.

Although many know of the ARK Grabbers, I wanted to start by highlighting a product I knew little about before this promotion – the Z-Grabber. ARK offers a line of products for oral motor and other therapy needs that offer both vibration, as an additional sensory input, as well as interchangeable tips to make it more versatile. The Z-Grabber is part of a line that includes the Z-Vibe (one Probe Tip), the DnZ-Vibe (double-ended version), and the Z-Grabber (chewable loop and one Textured Bite-n-Chew Tip XL). If the product alone weren’t innovative enough, it offers, by my count, over 30 different tips that can be used with it. From brushes to biters, probes to pens, spoons to suckers, and flossers to thermals, this product has so many uses for oral motor, fine motor, feeding, and oral hygiene. Using Case as my tester, he was fascinated with this product. I immediately started using it for increasing oral awareness for enunciation and it gave him an incentive to participate. I am looking forward to trying some pen/pencil tips to increase his awareness for fine motor work. Another ARK product I will look into for this is the new Tran-Quill Writing Kit.

ARK Grabbers

The variety of ARK Grabbers

Parents of children with special needs are often most familiar with the ARK Grabbers® or P’s & Q’s, as some call them. They include a wide variety of combinations of strength, texture, and even scent! Strength. ARK Grabbers® come in two strengths – the Grabber® and the Grabber XT®. The XT is a little stiffer and stronger and is perfect for that super chewer in your life. Texture. The textured Grabbers® and XTs have rectangular and circular nodules on the ends and loop. I can’t say it better than ARK: “Use these options for added proprioceptive input, to desensitize the mouth, and to transition from pureed to textured foods.” For some kids, they either just like the textured or the smooth ones better – test them out. Scent. There is a berry scented Grabber® and citrus, grape, chocolate, vanilla, and lemon Grabber XTs. Starting at the left with the plum colored one, the picture shows the variety of Grabbers in the Complete Grabber Family set: Grabber®, Grabber XT®, Textured Grabber XT®, Textured Grabber®, Citrus Scented Textured Grabber XT®, Berry Scented Textured Grabber®, 4 Scented Grabber XTs (Grape, Chocolate, Vanilla, and Lemon), and 2 Baby Grabbers (1 yellow and 1 light blue). Case particularly liked the scented Grabbers, especially the berry flavored ones!

Similar to the Grabber®, some kids instead prefer the ARK Y-Chews. The Y-Chews are also available in regular and XT and for kids who prefer variety, they are nice because each arm has a different texture: one smooth, one ribbed, and one with gentle bumps. These lack the loop that Grabbers have so you do lose the ability to easily attach it to shirts, wheelchairs, etc. And even more ARK features even more products like Tri-Chews, straw drinking and feeding therapy products, adapted toothbrushes and swabs, respiratory therapy products, auditory processing products, and professional publications. 10. Hi there :o) My son is 8 yrs old and has never, ever chewed. I’ve tried something similar to the grabbers but couldn’t get him to bite on it, didn’t matter if it was flavored or not, big or small or even his favorite color. Anyone, even a dentist, has trouble getting near his mouth, he puts up a good fight. Any tips you can toss my way would be most appreciated. Thanks :o)

    • Jen, does he have oral aversion? What is the specific reason why you are looking for him to chew? An occupational or speech therapist would probably have some great techniques or a introductory protocol to work on these issues!

    • Hi Jen,

Melissa’s right – seeing a therapist is always the best option. But in the meantime, you may find this article helpful on oral defensiveness: http://arktherapeutic.com/post/205

Once he’ll accept things in his mouth, this article has tips on how to teach biting and chewing skills: http://arktherapeutic.com/post/414

I hope this helps! Best of luck in the giveaway!
